Strewth!

A third of a million pounds worth of top-notch teak garden furniture is to go under the hammer in an extraordinary public auction in North Lincolnshire on Saturday, largely thanks to the rotten weather that’s ripped the heart out of the market.

The entire stock of one of the region’s largest importers and wholesalers of garden furniture . . . over fourteen hundred pieces . . . is to be sold off at the CJM Asset Management Auction Centre in Scunthorpe.

Going under the hammer will be everything from benches, tables and parasols to steamer chairs and butlers’ trolleys.

Also from the firm’s stockrooms have come more than fifty didgeridoos – and enough native drums to start a respectably-sized war!

Added to all that are the contents of a leading Grantham furniture store . . . Jaywood Limited . . . which has gone into receivership. Close to £50,000 of suites, dining room furniture, beds, wardrobes and other pieces have been consigned to the auction.

CJM director Paul Cooper said: “The garden furniture is being sold off following the decision of a large group to close down its division operating in this business. They have been around a long time but like a lot of other people they have been hit by the shocking weather which has cut demand for this type of furniture.”

“They supplied a lot of hotels and operations in the hospitality sector, so this stuff is sturdier and better quality than you would normally find on the high street.”

“We’ve got garden tables in a wide variety of styles and shapes, hundreds of solid teak chairs, including dozens of steamer chairs, benches, parasols, and peripherals such as picnic hampers, butlers trolleys, a patio heater and so on.”

“They did also supply some inside hotel furniture and furnishings and there are a number of double pedestal desks, rolltop desks, mirrors and upholstered Queen Anne style chairs as well as ethnic carvings, native drums and the didgeridoos.  We have 52 of them!”

“We are selling the stock in a variety of ways that will give members of the public just as good a chance to buy as the trade. Some pieces are being sold as single lots and some as sets that include a table, chairs, and parasol.”

“There should be some genuine bargains to be had. We are expecting that steamer chairs, for example, that would normally sell for £150-£200 will probably make half that at auction.”

Paul added: “The stock from Jaywood Limited goes across the range you would expect to find in a decent furniture shop, from leather suites to bedroom furniture. They did lean towards contemporary designs, so there are some different styles and shapes.”

“This is the biggest auction of its type that we have ever staged in Scunthorpe. We have had bigger sales of office furniture but nothing even close to this in terms of garden and domestic furniture.”

In all the sale extends to over 800 lots. The viewing sessions are on Friday (27th July) 11am-5pm and on Saturday morning from 9am until the start of the sale at 11 am. Catalogues are available from CJM or can be downloaded free of charge from the firm’s website: www.cjmasset.com
