News - Press Release

The Sailor's Sail

The entire stock of one of the Humber's leading Yachting Chandlery businesses is to go under the hammer at a public auction next week following the sale of the business.

Boat builders Clapson and Sons, who were based at the South Ferriby Marina, closed the doors on their specialist chandlery two weeks ago.

Tens of thousands of pounds worth of equipment, ranging from dinghies to clothing, is to go under the hammer in the auction at industrial auctioneers CJM Asset Management in Scunthorpe on Tuesday (December 12th).

CJM director Paul Cooper said: "The company has sold South Ferrriby Marina to another operator but he did not want to take on the chandlery business and therefore the entire contents have been sent to us for sale."

"They were exclusively geared to yachting and leisure sailing, so very specialist and one of the leading suppliers in their field on the river"

"We've got everything you can imagine including dinghies, clothing, lifejackets, sails, ropes rigging, masts, anchors, parts, you name it."

"Much of this stuff is really expensive in the chandlers. For example we've got two and a half litre cans of paint...anti-fouling hard racing paint...that retail for just under £90 a can."

"In all there are close to 600 lots of chandlery items in the auction. We estimate that their total retail value could be close to £40,000"

Paul added: "Where possible we have lotted things up in such a way that ordinary sailing enthusiasts have just as good a chance to bid as the trade. It is only large quantities of things like parts that will be sold in trade lots."

Next Tuesday's sale will also see machinery and equipment from failed Barton company McCollin Smith go under the hammer. Based on the Humber Bridge Industrial Estate, the firm specialised in interior panelling for commercial vehicles.

The business closed its doors in November. Now the liduidator handling the company's affairs has sent the firm's tools and equipment for sale as well as considerable quantites of ready-cut ply panels and materials.

The machinery to be auctioned includes a sophisticated panel saw that is expected to be one of the star lots of the sale. Bought at a cost of over £20,000 last year, it is expected to attract interest, as is some very good quality modern office furniture.

In all the sale extends to close to a thousand lots. The viewing sessions are on Monday (11th December) 1pm - 7pm and on Thursday morning from 8.30am until the start of the sale at 10am. Catalogues are available from CJM or can be downloaded free of charge from the firm's website: www.cjmasset.com
